OMEGA SPEEDMASTER 1959 pre MOON RARE 321 2998-1

omega speedmaster 2998I must admit to becoming fascinated by the market prices on the pre-moon Speedmasters. This latest example tipped the scales at just over $8000, which nowadays seems a fair price, even though I think its more likely to be a 1960 than a 1959 [huge difference imho]. I’m not a big fan of the 2998, it sort of falls between the collectibility of the 2915 [red hot and getting hotter!] and the moon-ness of the 105.003, whenever I see one I think “first of the losers”. :)

Having said that this one is a fine looking 2998 Speedmaster and yes that lollipop is original…..

RARE Omega Speedmaster PRE-MOONWATCH c.1959 without crown-guards. This watch was purchased by us (Antiquorum Australia) from the original owner’s family. It is possibly one of the best, unrestored Omega Speedmasters of its time. It features the original dial & hands (exactly as it left the Omega factory). The dial and hands are totally original and totally UN-restored (or re-painted). The luminous material has aged to a superb patina. The original bezel on the watch is still in superb original condition. The case is also in excellent condition with the Speedmaster Seahorse emblem on the case-back still clearly visible. There are a few marks on the case-back. Inside of the case-back is fully stamped and signed. The inside of the back is stamped with the numbers “2998-1″. Watch also has the original dust-cover in very clean condition. Omega calibre 321 movement (17 jewel) (movt. no.17301XXX) is still in beautiful condition, works well, and with the original luster on the plates & wheels. All the functions are working. Watch also features it’s rare original pushers & Omega signed crown. It is fitted with a black leather band and an original Omega buckle. This is truly a special timepiece and in exceptional condition for its age. Please bid with confidence, we are professional dealers and the watch is as described.

Cheeky Omega Blogger! The 1st of the losers? Nah. Sitting here typing looking at my 2998, I can’t imagine it with frustrating broad hands or boring batons.

When I went to blogging school they taught the three C’S, CONTROVERSY CREATES COMMENTS.

Looks like they were right ;)

I’m with you on the batons, but not on the broad hands.

I wouldn’t mind that watch, but I would really like to track down a 1962 Speedmaster which seem to be going for around $3500 if you can find one. As far as the being one of the first ones, it is important to know this as it adds context for the future versions.

I am interested in determining the value of an Omega Speedmaster Moon Watch. I have seen the $3500 range as well as the $8000 and the $300. The watch that I have was my father’s and has been in the bank vault since the time of the moon walk or earlier. (I remember him showing it to us). As far as I know, it was never worn. I have the watch box and the outer box and the package inserts with the omega enclosures and warrenties with the matching serial numbers. The watch and the boxes and enclosures are in excellent condition. How do I know if the watch is before or after the 1959 date. Would Omega be able to give me a date from the serial number? I would love to here from any experts. Thanks.

In response to Diane’s request I have two questions: 1) Does the watch say “Professional” on the dial? If it does, it would date from mid 1965 or newer. 2) Is the omega emblem on the dial an applied metal logo or in printed format? If metal, then your speedmaster is 1967 or earlier and most likely a desirable caliber 321 movement equipped model.

    Anyone reading this?

I have a speedmaster cal 321 probably early 50th or earlier.
(square buttons) in a very good shape.

Anyone knows what a fare market price would be?
