Lets Get Geeky with the Omega Speedmaster Reduced
Long gone are the days when us Geeks spent all our time in our Mom’s basement playing RPG’s. Today’s Geek is a man of the world, a sophisticated, stylish raconteur with an eye for the Ladies. Time for the world to wake up, Geek’s are on the march and their timepiece of choice is……you got it in one….three cheers for OMEGA!
Now I’m not a fool, I know the world ain’t quite ready for this yet so….through the medium of photography and the use of an iPod I present to you the Geeks Choice. Ladies, Gentlemen and fellow Geeks I give you [rolls drums] the Omega Speedmaster Reduced getting down and dirty with Apple’s iconic iPod.
For those of you with a really sharp eye yes that is Edwin Starr’s TIME [gedit] from an Ian Brown compilation album playing on an iPod with an Omega Speedmaster on top, how cool am I ?

This post is proof positive that not everything a geek loves has to be electronic, Far from it in fact: while much of what is intricate, avant garde, and/or otherwise regarded as a technological achievement happens to involve electronic components there are exceptions to the rule.
At first blush one might expect the garden variety geek to wear some modern descendant of the digital calculator watch of the 80’s such as the Casio Wave Ceptor complete with its atomic clock signal receiver that ensures its accuracy will easily eclipse that of watches such as my 16570 Explorer II. Ultra ‘techy geeky’ types might be expected to flock to the solar powered version of the same watch, while those geeks with more upscale tastes might be thought to prefer something Swiss made such as Tissot’s T-Touch.
Thanks for pointing out this is not always (or perhaps even usually) the case! Suffice to say that calling ‘old school’ non-electric/electronic watches ‘mechanical marvels’ here would be preaching to the proverbial choir however including many who employ and enjoy the ‘bleeding edge’ of electronic innovation amongst those who appreciate the finer qualities of a watch with a beating heart is refreshing. The stereotypical geek is after all most often accused of having predicted the demise of the mechanical watch during the quartz/digital watch revolution which very nearly sank the Swiss watch industry.
In short: very cool post.I just acquired a used Omega Speedmaster Reduced Schumacher red dial (ref #3810.61.41) with an 1143 movement and steel bracelet and am enjoying it a great deal.
Cheers,
- Peter
