The Seamaster Planet Ocean provides key features of a diver’s watch. It is water-resistant up to 600m, has a unidirection bezel, water-tight screw-in crown and the helium escape valve. The ring around the bezel comes in orange or black, the former chosen for its clarity under water.
But why the need to revive a 1957 model?
“If you work in a company with such a rich history, you are not given a blank paper on which to design a watch. The lines and shapes are already there, you just work on them,â€
“Every watch brand has an identity, and this is how Omega stays true to its philosophy. We keep the features of the brand intact but create watches with new technology and function to suit modern users,†he said.
“History is very important for old brands and its new products always incorporate something from its museum. That is what distinguishes it from younger brands. You can always come up with a new watch, but you cannot copy history,†Nunziata said.
