“The design of the Seamaster Planet Ocean reflects the first Seamaster 300 metre models released in 1957,” he said. In the same year, the brand also launched its Railmaster and Speedmaster watches.
The technology and designs have been modified to suit modern users. The stainless steel bracelet (it also comes with black rubber strap and dark brown and orange leather straps) is made to fit wrist better, Nunziata explained.
Both men were wearing the watch with striking, bright orange leather strap, complemented by their orange-striped shirts and orange tie.
“This year and last year, I see many fashion labels, like Zegna and Hugo Boss with this colour on their products,” Ponzo said.
The Seamaster Planet Ocean provides key features of a diver’s watch. It is water-resistant up to 600m, has a unidirection bezel, water-tight screw-in crown and the helium escape valve. The ring around the bezel comes in orange or black, the former chosen for its clarity under water.
But why the need to revive a 1957 model?
“If you work in a company with such a rich history, you are not given a blank paper on which to design a watch. The lines and shapes are already there, you just work on them,”
“Every watch brand has an identity, and this is how Omega stays true to its philosophy. We keep the features of the brand intact but create watches with new technology and function to suit modern users,” he said.
“History is very important for old brands and its new products always incorporate something from its museum. That is what distinguishes it from younger brands. You can always come up with a new watch, but you cannot copy history,” Nunziata said.
