The Rather Wonderful Speedmaster 2915

I thought it was about time I took a bunch of shots of this one, getting close to when it needs to go away for a little TLC.

Restoration is a personal thing, my view is that you need to keep the watch as original as humanly possible. On this 2915, sat in a drawer since the 70’s, there is not a great deal that needs doing. It needs an original crown and one is on its way, I have acquired a full set of hands if needed, we shall see as I’m not 100% convinced that the sub hands need replacing. The original bracelet 7077 is on the way too. Dial needs a clean, maybe just maybe a relume in tritium, maybe not. That leaves us with the bezel, its a tough one to call and a personal decision but I feel that its either original or its not, that leaves me with the task, the near impossible task, of locating an original bezel. The only other possible alternative is to have an exact replica custom made, and I mean exact! Its the “right” thing to do.

Take a look at this bunch of pics, hopefully I will be back with some “after” shots sometime in the future. No rush though as the 50th anniversary is not until 2007 [the speedmaster 2915 was created in 1957], I’d just like it to be ready for then. The images in the pictures with 50 Club on them are from a promotion that Omega ran with its dealers staff in the early 1980’s , if you sold 50 watches you got to choose a free Omega for yourself up to a value of £175. I just thought it was appropriate for the 2915, soon to be a true member of the 50 club along with the 2913 and 2914, I’m tempted to include the Ranchero 2990 in that club too.

Enjoy!

    Hello,

I am trying to identify my father’s Omega and can not determine if it is a 2915 or later model. He purchased the watch in 1961 and the primary dial hand has an arrow like your watch pictured below…however, his watch has a crown guard. How do I go about identifying the watch and restoring it back to original condition?

    Thanks in advance.

An update-the watch has been verified as a 2915, which my father purchased in 1958.
I will post pics soon…the watch is in extremely good condition and is missing an original band. To restore or not restore-that is the question. Does anyone have an opinion?

Definately restore but ONLY at a real watchmaker. I just resored my 2915 that my mother had found. The watchmaker was awesome and could restore 100% excpet for crystal, they do not have any more of the original crystals. As for the band, i am searching for a replacement band for mine. yoru band looks original, the watch is featured in the Omega Speedmaster bible bothy with steel band and brown leather band, your band looks almost exactly like the band in the book. I have seen prices for this watch 7,000 and up. if you need a watchmaker lead please let me know. 508-561-5901. Mitch

I own the schumacher legend series speedmaster. A few of my friends who are rich think it worth more than it is, and the others (who aren’t rich) think its a fake! :-D

But I sure feel like a million bucks whenever I wear it!

I’ve just picked up a 2915-1 and I’m highly delighted. It needs a little work to bring back to original spec (dial, hands, bezel and pushers) but the movement, case and caseback are all in wonderful condition.

Does anyone know how many of these were made?
