007 We Have a New James Bond - Will We Have a New Omega Bond Watch ?

If Omega retain the “product placement” rights will they go with a new Bond watch? My money would be on the Planet Ocean, I think the old Bond watch is looking a little tired.

Now a special edition 007 James Bond Planet Ocean watch has a certain ring to it!

It seems fitting that the film industry’s biggest secret — who would replace Pierce Brosnan as 007 — was broken one day early by Daniel Craig’s delighted mother. Her name is Blond — Carol Blond. And it follows that the newly anointed Craig will be the first blond actor to play Ian Fleming’s dark-haired sadist.

Craig is not an obvious choice. Although possessed of a smouldering screen presence and piercing blue eyes, his nickname “Mr Potato Head” suggests that he lacks the clean good looks of his five predecessors as James Bond — Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Brosnan.

Culver City, CA October 14, 2005 – It was announced today by producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. and Sony Pictures Entertainment, that DANIEL CRAIG has been cast in the role of the legendary British secret agent, James Bond, in the highly anticipated 007 adventure thriller CASINO ROYALE.

CASINO ROYALE reunites Wilson and Broccoli with Martin Campbell, who directed the 1995 Bond blockbuster GOLDENEYE. His most recent film, “The Legend of Zorro,” will be released on October 28, 2005.

CASINO ROYALE will be the 21st James Bond film produced by the franchise holders, EON Productions. The MGM/Columbia Pictures production begins shooting in January and is due for release worldwide on November 17, 2006. It will be filmed in the Czech Republic, the Bahamas, Italy and the UK.

Neal Purvis and Robert Wade wrote the screenplay based on famed author Ian Fleming’s first novel. The script is currently being polished by Academy Award®-nominated writer, Paul Haggis (“Million Dollar Baby”).

Born in 1968, DANIEL CRAIG was raised on the Wirral nr. Liverpool. He moved to London to join the National Youth Theatre at the age 17 and continued his training at the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama. CRAIG has since become regarded as one of Britain’s finest actors securing a variety of roles in television, theatre and film.

He is currently filming a thriller alongside Nicole Kidman, “The Visiting”, and has two films in post-production; Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” and Douglas McGrath’s “Every Word Is True”, co-starring Sandra Bullock and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Recent film credits include Sam Mendes’ “The Road to Perdition”, “The Mother”, “Sylvia”, and last year he received much critical acclaim for Matthew Vaughn’s “Layer Cake” as well as Roger Michell’s “Enduring Love”.

Wilson and Broccoli said “It has been a long time ambition for us to film the first book in the series, CASINO ROYALE, which defined the complex character of James Bond. We are thrilled DANIEL CRAIG will play the character of 007. Daniel is a superb actor who has all the qualities needed to bring a contemporary edge to the role. CASINO ROYALE will have all the action, suspense and espionage that our audiences have come to expect from us but nevertheless takes the franchise in a new and exciting direction.”

“James Bond is a character without peer in motion picture history,” said Pascal, Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group. “He is a household name recognized in virtually every corner of the globe and because of this renown, the casting of the new 007 takes on a special importance. We believe that in DANIEL CRAIG we have found the ideal 21st century Bond and we couldn’t be more privileged to be working with Barbara and Michael, who are tireless champions and guardians of the James Bond legacy.”

Director Martin Campbell said, “The thing about James Bond is that each actor who has filled the role has brought his own style and imprint. With Daniel as our new Bond, I am thrilled to be returning to shepherd the new 007 in the new Bond adventure.”

Dan Taylor, President of Metro Goldwyn Mayer Inc, said: “All of us here at MGM are delighted that Daniel Craig, an actor of such high-calibre, has been chosen to be the next Bond. We are also very excited to be working closely with Barbara and Michael again and with Columbia Pictures on CASINO ROYALE, which we predict to be the biggest, best Bond ever.”

While I agree w/ you that the Planet Ocean is, indeed, a beautiful watch, I’m not sure that it has the makings of “the next James Bond watch.” As someone who owns the 2531.80 (Omega Seamaster 007 chronometer), let me add that even this is not ideal in my opinion. Hands are impractical for the sort of reading speed and environments of use for James Bond. Blue dial and bezel too flashy. Now the Planet Ocean adds size, weight and dial elements (eg, numerals) that introduce distraction w/ no value. Again, altho the Planet Ocean is on my “next purchase” list, I think that the “objective” Bond watch choice is the 2254.50 Omega Seamaster. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest!

(PS As I note in my own blog, it would appear that Omega has already spilled the beans regarding its product placement in Bond 21, “Casino Royale.”)

  3. IWC lover Says:

I’d agree with you. Planet Ocean may be a big watch, yet the look is classic enough, especially the black one. I’d to see PO as the next Bond watch.

  4. Dell Deaton Says:

Wanted to update you w/ some information that I’ve posted to my own James Bond blog (http://www.delldeaton.com/Bond-21-blog.htm), re The “Casino Royale” watch. Very high sources have told me directly that, in addition to the Planet Ocean, the De Ville Co-Axial Power Reserve (4832.51.31) is a strong option for “Casino Royale” when filming begins this month. See my 1/5 blog regarding a most revealing addition to their website! Also appears that an updated 2531.80 is not out of the running, since it is being “updated” to co-axial escapement for public release in April.

  5. Omega Blogger Says:

    Many thanks Dell!

I’ll have a wander over to your site shortly, maybe do a review if thats OK with you as I’m sure many of our visitors are interested in all things Bond!

  6. Dell Deaton Says:

Absolutely fine; I am starting to post movie comments as well.

Meantime, since the Aston Martin announcement today, I’ve made further inquiries as to the Omega decision. We are, after all, less than 2 weeks out from start of filming now.

    Best to you, Dell

  7. Dell Deaton Says:

I can’t believe you’re missing out on all the back-and-forth, postings-and-withdrawn-postings (on the official Omega SA website, no less), for the new James Bond watch.

Your Planet Ocean badboy may emerge once the dust settles after all. But field reps are telling the distributors, “orange.”

Feel free to eMail me, or visit by Bond 21 blog.

  8. D J Wilson Says:

I think you’re right, the OMEGA Planet Ocean 2201.50 should look good as the next watch for James Bond. Its a classic edition to the OMEGA collection. Correct me if Im wrong or missing something, but it seems that the blue dial has been favoured in past Bond films. I think the refinement of the 2201.50 with its black dial and bezel on such high grade steel can only stand ahead of other OMEGA models when joining forces with the new Mr Bond. Not that Im biased or anything as I read on with my own 2201.50 on my wrist. :-) Thank you

  9. Scott Says:

I think its going to be the old style seamastert with a completely new dial no waves ,no oo7,something new.just a thought

  10. Spencer Says:

I’ve seen pictures of an all black planet ocean on a sharp rubber strap in several pictures. I dunno if it is the full size, 45mm, or the midsize, 42mm. hard to imagine that 42mm is midsize, as I have a 2531.80, the full size automatic Brosnan one, which is considered full size. The PO is a good Bond watch in my opinion, as it is modeled off the old Seamaster 300s from the 60’s. The only thing that takes away from it though is the white gold trim around the markers, which in my opinion makes it look less unique. I’ve also heard rumors that Craig will also be wearing the James Bond GMT, the one that looks like the Brosnan Seamaster only with a GMT hand. If so, oh well, one more bond watch for me to obtain, but a GMT watch I think is much less practical than a Chronograph. If you look real REAL close in the teaser poster you’re able so see a watch with a metal band, so maybe thats it.

  11. Pier Says:

well, I really think they won’t change the watch. the watches don’t change with actors. when Moore became bond, he changed the watch after the first movie, because they decided to purchase Seiko (for the new “japan rush” in the period).
now bond is a great puppet to be dressed with lot of brands. I don’t think they’ll change the watch for the new actor, but it’s possible.
I don’t think it will be this PlanetOcean.

  12. Michael Says:

Omega has already released the next James Bond watch. I saw it at a Tourneau location a couple of weeks ago. It is just like the old Omega Seamaster except the back end of the second hand has a “007″ on it and the face resembles the swirling lines resembling the inside of Bond’s scilencer. I believe production was limited to 10,000 pieces and it was $3,400 (if I remember correctly).

The watch looks great but not worth the price for the few modifications if you already own the older version.

  13. branDON aka 007 Says:

They just don’t get any better then my Seamaster! This is the ORIGINAL Omega Bond watch, and it is, without a doubt, my favorite timepiece (next to my Tag Heuer’s, and Rolex). Great watch with James Bond toughness!

  14. Dell Deaton Says:

    Final answer: Planet Ocean.

Just learned today that there’s a second “Limited Edition” James Bond watch coming out from Omega SA for “Casino Royale.” This time just 5,007 pieces (as opposed to 10,007 for the Seamaster LE). Yup, it’s a model number 2709.50.91 (or 27095091, if you prefer) Planet Ocean.

See my website for further details.

  17. Dell Deaton Says:

Looks like the Omegablogger “mock-up” was off only by the gun barrel logo placement!

  19. Stian (Norway) Says:

James Bond is going to use two watches in Casino Royale! The watches are: Omega Seamaster Pro Co-Axial (blue) and the Planet Ocean (black). Yes both! Now you now.

By the way… All the 007 limited watches (it exist 2 at the moment) is Not going to be in a bond movie what so ever. Not the one with the swirling lines or the one with all the 007 logos. Tnx for your time;)

  20. Graham Says:

Hello again, well I have collected my Limited Edition Casion Royale Planet Ocean and I love it. It feels a lot sturdier than my other Omega’s (40 year Bond Limited Edition and Americas Cup Limited Edition) and looks brilliant with either jeans or suit. The presentation box with the embossed logo is also, to my mind, a lot classier than the previous box. If you have the means and the chance to buy one of these then go for it. You will not be disappointed.

  22. Tony Preece Says:

Just got my early Christmas present a 5007 Planet Ocean and it looks fantastic, very easy to read, not too heavy and the 007 logo addition does not detract from a very handsome chronometer. I would like to have had one with 007 in the number but still very happy.
